Folks have been collecting Railroad Days buttons from the Portola event since 1983. Most incorporate a train image which first appeared in the original button design.
A “dmontuori” designed the art for the first button. Though we know little about the artist, the Portola Railroad Days Association continues its quest to put a face to a name.
The association has opened up the design of the button to the public over the years, choosing variations of the original design, photographic images, cartoon images and montages.
Debra Baer and Donna Mills, members of Portola Railroad Days Association, created the 2011 design, featuring the fabled California Zephyr “Silver Solarium”, a Vista-Dome-Sleeper-Lounge Observation car, which was in continuous service from 1948 to 1981.
Buttons from past years, as well as this year’s collectible, will be available for purchase soon and at the event on August 18 – 21. |
